‘সাতগাঁর হাওয়াতাঁতিরা’ এক আশ্চর্য উপন্যাস, যাকে সময় বা ভূখণ্ড দিয়ে বোঝাতে পারা মুশকিল। ইতিহাসের খুঁটিনাটির সঙ্গে লেখকের নিখুঁত পর্যবেক্ষণ ক্ষমতা ও বিস্ময়কর কল্পনাশক্তির মিশেল। তার সঙ্গে একেবারে বাদাম পাহাড় থেকে খুঁজে ফিরিয়ে আনা লেখকের একান্ত ব্যক্তিগত লিখনভঙ্গিমা। সত্যি বলতে কী, এর সঙ্গে তুলনা করার মতো উপন্যাস, আমার সীমিত পঠন-অভিজ্ঞতায়, দেশ ও বিদেশের লেখকদের ধরেই বলছি, খুব বেশি পড়িনি।

যদ্দূর মনে পড়ে, ‘রূপসী বাংলা’-র উৎসর্গপত্রে লেখা ছিল— আবহমান বাংলা ও বাঙালীকে। ‘সাতগাঁর হাওয়াতাঁতিরা’ প্রসঙ্গেও কথাটা বলা যায়— আবহমান বাঙালী জীবন তথা বাঙালিত্বের প্রতি… হোমেজ।

পরিমল ভট্টাচার্যের ‘সাতগাঁর হাওয়াতাঁতিরা’ বাঙলার এই বহুস্তরীয় ও বহুস্বরীয় সাংস্কৃতিক উত্তরাধিকারকে নতুন করে আবিষ্কার করার এক আশ্চর্য আখ্যান। … যেকোন ভাষায় এমন একেকটা উপন্যাস লেখা হয়, ক্বচিৎ-কদাচিৎ, যা সেই ভাষার সাহিত্যকে আগাপাশতলা ঝাঁকিয়ে দেয়, তৈরি করে একটা নতুন বাঁক অথবা এক ভিন্ন প্রস্থানভূমি। বাংলাসাহিত্যে এই উপন্যাস তেমনই দিঙনির্ণায়ক ভূমিকা পালন করবে বলে মনে হয় আমার। বিপুল বিস্তার ও আখ্যানের সমস্ত জটিলতা-সত্ত্বেও, এই উপন্যাসের সুখপাঠ্যতা এমনই, যে একবার শুরু করলে, শেষ না-করা অবধি পাঠকের পরিত্রাণের কোনও উপায় থাকে না।

উজানস্রোত

এ বইয়ের ঘোর কাটিয়ে ওঠা যাবে না কখনও। বাংলাভাষার ধ্রুবপদে ‘সাতগাঁর হাওয়াতাঁতিরা’ জীবনগান বেঁধে নিয়েছে। শিরোনামবিহীন অধ্যায়গুলো অবিরাম চৈতন্যপ্রবাহে ছোট-বড় বিস্ফোরণ ঘটাতে ঘটাতে চলে, কখনও বিরতি নিতে দেয় না। প্রাচীন ক্ষয়াটে এক জনপদ অভিজ্ঞান হারানো উন্মাদিনীর মতো পথরোধ করে, ডাকে একটি অনন্ত পাঠক্রিয়ার দিকে। বইটিকে নিয়ে, বইটিকে অতিক্রম করে, আরও আরও কাহিনির দিকে।

চার নম্বর প্ল্যাটফর্ম

এই বই সম্পর্কে বিভিন্ন আলোচনায় মার্কেজের নাম বারেবারে আসছে… আমি আরো দুটো বইয়ের কথা এই প্রসঙ্গে বলতে চাই বিষয়গতভাবে যারা এ বইয়ের খুব কাছাকাছি। কুররাতুল-আইন হায়দারের River of Fire (উর্দু আগ কি দরিয়া) আর রিজিয়া রহমানের বং থেকে বাংলা।…হায়দার, রিজিয়া বা পরিমলবাবু কেউই ঐতিহাসিক উপন্যাস লেখেন নি, যা লিখেছেন সেগুলিকে ইতিহাসসম্মত বলা যায়।…নি:সংশয়ে বলতে পারি এই বই আমার পড়া অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ বাংলা উপন্যাস। বারে বারে আমাকে ফিরে যেতে হবে এ উপন্যাসের কাছে।

গুরুচন্ডালী

এই মানের ও এই ব্যপ্তির উপন্যাস গত তিরিশ বছরে বাংলাসাহিত্যে লেখা হয়নি। তার আগেও কি হয়েছিল? এ’ উপন্যাস পড়তে পড়তে অনেকবার মনে হয়েছে ‘ইছামতী’ পড়ছি। ঐতিহাসিকতার ঘনঘটায় কখনও আবার আসে বঙ্কিমী ঝংকার! বস্তুত, পরিমলের এই হাওয়াতাঁতিরা বঙ্গীয় উপন্যাসধারার দেড়শ’ বছরের প্রয়াসের নির্যাস!

পরবাস

On the fish-shaped land between the rivers Hugli and Saraswati stood the ancient port city of Satgaon. For centuries, Arab, Chinese and European merchants have sailed in here, propelled by the mawsim winds. The Portuguese, the Dutch, the Danes and the French have set up trading posts. Here, upon this rich cosmopolitan landscape, a clan of Kanauji Brahmins had set up a home around a temple dedicated to Lord Ram. A girl from this clan marries a young archeologist, an East Bengalirefugee, who comes to Satgaon on a project. Bappaditya, their son, is the novel's hero.
